Reasons for engaging in volunteer, highly challenging cognitive tasks:

“Challenge and mastery, along with making a contribution”

“A transcendent purpose”

“motivation gets un-moored from the purpose motive, bad things happen”

We are purpose maximisers not only profit maximisers “

 

The science shows that we care about mastery very very deeply…and we are self directed…

The march of technology..and society towards complexity is unstoppable, says Kevin Kelly.

The industrial age is over, so stop producing commodities…produce art, says Seth Godin.

Formal education is useless, says, Steve Jobs etc.
